A lot of things have been written about 4G becoming the next big step in turning your mobile phone into a supercomputer. With fast wireless data transmission rates, download and upload speeds 4G just might change the way we use our handy dandy mobile phones. But before taking that next big step in buying a 4G handset, you should ask yourself this. What’s the difference between 3G and 4G? and why should I use 4G and shell out a couple of hundred bucks a year for the service when I can surf the net, watch videos, and pretty much do anything else on a current 3G handset.
Well that is a valid argument. Case in point, what is in it for the consumer if he upgrades to a 4G network and 4G-ready handset? Unlike 3G, the speeds and download rates that you would get from being in a 4G network is really, really fast. How fast, you ask? Theoretically, it’s a hundred times faster, so let’s say you would want to download a movie through your phone, in a 4G network you could possibly finish downloading the whole thing in five minutes, as opposed to quite possibly an eternity of waiting using the existing 3G network. But then again you would not have to pay an arm and a leg for being able to download the movie online, and what is the purpose of the wi-fi connectivity of the current crop of 3G smart phones? Another concern for people in choosing 4G over 3G is the reliability of the networks. With 4G still in its infancy, not a lot of carriers are using the technology. So if you are in a place where a 4G network is not available, then guess its back to good old 3G?
So what about the decision? Well, whatever standard might be patronized or pushed forward by telecommunications companies and wireless broadband internet service providers, the clear winner will always be the consumer or the subscriber of these services. Ultimately, the goal of 3G and 4G is to make life easier for everyone by making it easier for people to connect to others and to the world through the medium of the internet.
